The 3-Race series will be staged from September to November and held primarily on the 2nd Saturday of each month……. But check the exact dates in the race schedule below.

The series of races will allocate points to riders over all the events and determine the sport best, in Nepal, over 4 categories (Open, Female, Junior and Senior).

There will also be an Inter-schools competition and trophy as part of the juniors race series.

Given it is a 3-race series & the interest / publicity in the event, we expect the largest number of participants ever to race.

17th July News Break:

IMG & TWI The World's Leader in international sports coverage will be filming the HMB event with their film crew for distribution to various TV networks world wide. So, start your training and get in shape for a telecast that will put Nepal mountain biking on the 2001 destination list for future events

Introduction:
Nepal is widely known as a mountainous country; the landscapes and the natural beauty are so diverse that mountain biking is a sport well suited to the country. More people are finding this out, thus the rapid rise in foreigners coming here just for biking.

This year HMB will stage a series of races that will form the largest mountain biking event held in the country and incorporate the first ever "National Mountain Bike Championship" to crown the country's best. We expect this series to provide the first real opportunity & incentive for athletes to get involved in the sport on a consistent basis and not just train for a once-in-a-year event. It should provide the impetus to rally new interest and dedication in the sport in Nepal. As in past years visiting International Racers will be welcomed.

Dates & details of the 3-Race series are listed below and commences on saturday Sept 9th and finishes on November 11th 2000 with the Series Awards Ceremony at The Radisson Hotel Kathmandu

Schools and the Junior Category will form a special focus for the first time in the sports history. School bike skills, maintenance and race preparations will be the topic of pre-race programs offered by HMB. Sponsors can be incorporated into these and, in all; it should result in a healthy turn out by junior racers and our future leaders in the sport.

The Race Course
This is a course that has been used successfully in four other mountain biking events and offers a large variety of terrain and riding conditions the makes the course challenging & exciting.

The race will be based on a lap system where one lap is approx 11.3Km for the Open and Senior Categories. The length of the race will depend on the race category and this is summarized below.

The course is based on Union of Cycling International (UCI) race standards and suggested course format. In this case the race provides for excellent media coverage and spectator viewing as the Open Category Racers will pass the spectator crowd on 10 occasions. This allows the audience sufficient time to move around the course & see various aspects of the race, providing for excellent photographic opportunities and support of the athletes. The total length of the course is approx. 30 Km. i.e. based on the five laps OPEN course.

Glimpses from the race

There are a number of reasons for selecting this kind of course. Firstly, it is near to Kathmandu, so it's accessible for spectators & racers alike and provides for easy logistics with transport and access. We are expecting a large number of participants and we always get a large crowd of locals watching. Thirdly, a lap system creates good involvement among both audience and the participants, who can be viewed throughout the whole race. Portion of the course is perched high above the starting line, thus an excellent vista is obtained over the entire course. The course can be marshaled and supervised and therefore is adequately safe. Medical facilities are within 5 minutes of the course.
